Application of the galatean model to psychotherapy assessment

The efficiency of the galatean model in facilitating knowledge elicitation and representing classification behaviour has been investigated by building a cognitive model of the process a consultant psychotherapist uses when deciding whether or not to accept a patient for psychodynamic psychotherapy. It was carried out in collaboration with the Uffculme Clinic in Birmingham which houses the National Health Service Regional Psychotherapy Unit of the West Midlands.

The classification (galatean) model was constructed on the basis of a single psychotherapist's knowledge. This enabled the generation of a questionnaire for gathering the assessment data and the model successfully emulated the psychotherapist's decisions (see the abstract of a paper publishing this research). A decision support system based on the model would have potential benefits in the areas of therapist training, service monitoring, improved referral decisions, and better targeting of resources.
